My Golden Wedding Anniversary would have been a couple of days ago on 10 July. I have been dreading it approaching, as it seems to highlight even more that Greg is no longer here. We married on 10 July in that baking hot summer of 1976. We honeymooned in Cornwall and then went off to spend three years in Cologne where Greg had a journalist job with a major radio station there, broadcasting back to England.
I could not face spending this momentous anniversary day on my own, as it would have been too depressing, so I embroiled my best friend from university (and bridesmaid) into doing something with me. We settled on a trip to Brighton to do a promenade walk, breathe in some sea air, stay overnight there and visit our other joint university friend who a few weeks ago had an emergency hip operation. Sadly, it was far too hot to venture far from our hotel opposite Preston park. We did not even get to the seafront. Even a ten-minute stroll to the park cafe turned us into molten skin and bone. Fortunately I had asked for a north-facing room and, with the addition of a fan, my hotel room was ice-cool, so my bridesmaid and I spent a lot of time chatting about what we had done hour by hour on the wedding day 50 years ago.
Later that day, we went to visit our other friend who had had the hip operation and spent a few hours with her in the evening cool of her garden. I journeyed back from Brighton yesterday lunchtime and was completely wiped out, so much so that I had a two-hour afternoon nap!! Unheard of.
Then last night I watched the England football match. All in all, the various distraction methods worked. Happy Golden Wedding, Greg.

I'm glad you found a way of managing a difficult day.
Spending the day with an old friend or two seems like a good way to "handle" it.
You did the right thing keeping busy with a friend. I can’t believe I now have friends celebrating their golden wedding. I’ve also been to two 70th birthday celebrations in the last month. Where have all the years gone?
It is good to have Friends Who Understand.
It's funny as I have never bothered about the anniversaries missed up to now, but the Golden one loomed too special.
It certainly helped to make the day less sad.
I know exactly what you mean. I feel 25 inside. My body tells me otherwise!!
I agree. My friend was my bridesmaid and is also my daughter's godmother, so she understands completely.
