I have been having some work done on my guest bedroom. Having had painters in to strip some woodchip off the walls, replaster and then paint, I still have one alcove unfinished. It is a small alcove with a wash basin in it. I want it tiled round the three surrounding walls and round the basin itself. It is not a massive job and the tiling is only 2.65 square metres.
Finding a tiler to do that work has been like looking for the Loch Ness monster. They're either too busy, or don't bother to answer my approach to them or, in one case, quote an exorbitant price in the hope I'll go away. Bear in mind, I will provide and already have the tiles, one quote just for labour was £800. Seriously? At this rate, I may end up attempting to tile it myself.

I would seriously suggest giving it a go yourself. Just look to centre the tiles above the basin, make sure that the first row is horizontal and work to the walls and follow round the other two walls. Get yourself a decent tile cutter that can handle the size of tile you're using. I find that plastic spacers are good for keeping the tiles properly spaced For grouting use a rubber squeegee to get the grout into the joins, and finish with a wet finger (but be careful where you have cut tile edges. Provided that you don't need to work around pipes or other funny shape fittings it should be quite straightforward.
Thank you Will. That is very useful. I may well have a go.
I’d be tempted to sand and paint with kitchen paint - Dulux Easycare wipeable and washable, £29.52 for 2.5litres, enough for a few coats
I;'ve never tiled myself but Will's suggestions sound very good... best of luck!
