My best friend's mother is 100 today. What an amazing achievement to reach that grand old age. Sadly she has dementia and is not aware of reality. Although she may realise it is her birthday from the abundance of cards (including one from Her Majesty the Queen), flowers and presents, she will probably not realise the significance of her age. She will probably spend it, like most days, dozing with small glimpses of wakefulness. She still lives at home with a live-in carer, visiting carers and a cat. Her wider family will send whatsapp videos via my friend to sing Happy Birthday to her. An amazing lady. An amazing age.

Hi Addy, thanks for stopping by my blog. As with everyone, good riddance to 2020.
New Year's Eve, we were called to my mother-in-laws home, who we hadn't seen since early March, right before the world shut-down with the darn pandemic. She will be turning 88 end of this month, but she is shutting down. She lives with a full time caregiver, and her two dogs, but she recently stopped eating, just a few bites and such, and is sleeping most of the day now. This has been going on for a month now, and the caregiver thought it best to see her because the caregiver believes my mother-in-law may not be around for long. My mother-in-law made it clear, no calling the ambulance or taking her to the doctor's office. Let her be, keep her comfortable and do not worry. After reading your post, 88 seems to early to give up on living. Not that my mother-in-law has said she is done living, etc., it's just she is fading away. So sad to see her like this, after not being around her for most of 2020. But we are here now, and that is what matters now.
Happy New Year
But how very sad to reach such a grand age without the mental faculties to reflect upon a hundred years of living and to appreciate how far one has come. She must have been born in 1921 - the same year as my mother who died in 2007.
